How to choose a padel racket

The right padel racket comes down to three things: shape, weight & balance, and core hardness. Match each to your skill level and playing style and you'll have a racket that improves your game instead of holding it back.

1. Shape

Round rackets have a low balance point and the largest sweet spot — ideal for beginners and players who prioritise control. Teardrop rackets sit in the middle, giving a balance of power and forgiveness, and suit intermediate players. Diamond rackets are head-heavy with a smaller sweet spot, designed for advanced players who want maximum power on smashes.

2. Weight & balance

Most padel rackets weigh between 350g and 390g. Lighter rackets (350–365g) are easier to manoeuvre and put less strain on your wrist and elbow — great for beginners and women's players. Heavier rackets (375–390g) generate more power but require stronger technique. Balance point follows the same logic: low balance for control, high balance for power.

3. Core hardness

EVA Soft cores absorb impact, give better control, and reduce vibration — recommended for beginners and players with elbow sensitivity. EVA Hard cores transfer more energy back to the ball, giving you more power but less forgiveness on off-centre hits.

4. Skill level

If you've been playing under 12 months, prioritise a forgiving round or teardrop racket under $200. Intermediate players (1–3 years) can experiment with higher-balance teardrops. Advanced and competitive players generally know what they want — diamond shapes with EVA Hard cores deliver the power they need.

Padel racket finder — frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right padel racket?

Choose based on three factors: your experience level, playing style, and budget. Beginners should look for a round-shaped racket with a large sweet spot and good manoeuvrability. Intermediate players do well with teardrop shapes. Advanced players often prefer diamond shapes for extra power.

What padel racket should a beginner buy?

Beginners should buy a round-shaped padel racket under $150. Round rackets have a lower balance point and a larger sweet spot, making it much easier to get the ball in play consistently. Look for good manoeuvrability ratings and a forgiving EVA Soft core.

What is the difference between a control and a power padel racket?

Control rackets are softer and more forgiving, helping you place the ball precisely. They suit baseline players and beginners. Power rackets are stiffer with a higher balance point, generating more force on smashes. They suit aggressive players who are comfortable with a smaller sweet spot.

What are the best padel rackets under $100?

There are excellent padel rackets available under $100, especially for beginners and recreational players. Use our racket finder quiz above to get personalised recommendations based on your level and style — set the budget filter to "Under $100" and we'll match you with the best in-stock options.

How long does a padel racket last?

A padel racket typically lasts 1–3 years for recreational players and 6–12 months for competitive players who play multiple times per week. The carbon fibre face and EVA core gradually lose responsiveness over time. Watch for cracks in the frame and a noticeable drop in power as signs to replace.

Do women need a women's-specific padel racket?

Not necessarily — the "women's" label usually means a slightly lighter racket (350–365g) with a lower balance point and softer core. Any player who prefers a manoeuvrable, control-oriented racket can use one. Our finder filters specifically for these characteristics when you select Women's.
